The first Chub Study Group (C.S.G.) book, titled ‘Chub’, was published in 1994 to commemorate twenty-one years of the Chub Study Group. This first book was compiled by group stalwart and current vice-president Graham Cornish and edited by Len Cacutt, the founder editor of Angler’s Mail. It was an Angling Library’ title published by the Boydell Press.

‘Chub’ had a limited distribution and is now considered by many to be a collector’s item. The book had been compiled from the numerous contributions to the C.S.G. bulletins/newsletters called ‘Chevin’, which had been produced on a regular basis since the group was founded by Tony Carter in 1972. In addition, other notable angling writers were asked to contribute articles to the first book. However, the group has always had members well known to the angling public and these provided contributions to the first book, including, Dick Walker, Peter Stone, Matt Hayes and Bruce Vaughan.

Now, sixteen years later, the group is  to publish a second book titled ‘Chevin’. This time the book was compiled, edited, and designed entirely by the group members. The source of the majority of the contributions originate from the C.S.G. members who have either provided material for the group bulletins or have specifically written articles for this publication.

The C.S.G. was founded in 1972 by Tony Carter after reforming the National Specimen Chub Group. Details of the Group History and Milestones are included in one chapter of this publication. The name, ‘Chub Study Group’ gives the impression that the members only study the chub but in reality they are, and always have been, primarily ‘specimen chub catchers’. However, the group has amassed an enormous amount of information about the chub, and due to the foresight of the founder, now has a database containing the records of over 15,000 chub exceeding 4lb caught by group members over 38 years. These records have been analysed and there are some interesting statistics in one chapter of this book. The group has consistently managed to have a comprehensive coverage of the various rivers throughout the United Kingdom despite having a fairly modest membership level. Without a doubt the group reflects the general chub fishing history of the nation’s rivers covering the past 38 years.

This book is not necessarily a complete guide to catching the chub. However, there are plenty of articles that describe useful methods and techniques, some of which will not be widely known outside the group.
In addition, there are numerous tips, interesting observations and information about the ever-changing rivers and their fish and the characters found on the river bank. Some entries are just amusing anecdotes and accounts of a day fishing but they truly reflect the atmosphere and nature of the many aspects of chub fishing on Britain’s rivers. The chub must surely be one of the most widespread and interesting fish in our waterways, which can be caught by so many different methods in a wide range of conditions.

In addition to various group chapters about the chub there are individual chapters by the C.S.G. members, past and present, including - Dick Walker, Peter Stone, Charles Landells, Bob Buteux, Dave Gamble, Graham Cornish, Trevor Sawyer, Dave Ivey, Fred Sykes, Kevin Tolmie, Phil Sampford, Bruce Vaughan, Eddie Harrison, Stewart Allum, Iain Nairn, Mic Foot, John Conway, Martin Barnatt, Darren McCann, Paul Forshaw, Stuart Shepherd, Tony Acres, Robin Wallis, Paul Sykes, Paul Brown, Terry Brindle, John Searl, Richard Trim, Alan Owers, Kevin Clifford, Andy Dalby, Simon Cooper, Paul Flint, Dave Slater, Bill Neal, Steve Plumb and John Hepworth.

The book is produced by John Mason, Design and Print, Aylesbury. 384 pages - 245 mm x 170 mm - 115 gms white silk paper. Colour printing throughout. 279 photographs plus 20 graphs/tables. Thread sewn - Wibalin burgundy coloured cloth board. Front dust wrapper drawing by John Searl.
